Our student AK took IELTS in Sri Lanka and remembered the following questions from his exam:
Writing test
Writing task 1 (a report)
The table below gives information about students studying in six departments in an Australian university in 2011.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
* Note: this isn’t the original table given in the test, it was recreated for the purpose of demonstration.
Writing task 2 (an essay)
In this technological era, personal information is stored on computers by many companies and organisations.
Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
The table got me stuck as it contains so much data. One way to make groupings, I suppose, is to simply follow the three categories the students were divided into? Therefore, in the first paragraph, we can write about the most and the least popular subjects among females, and in the second paragraph, we can describe the other two categories. One of the comparisons is that the subjects most favored by girls were the least chosen by non-native English speakers.
This is a good approach, Maya. You could also have 3 paragraphs, if you wanted to cover each column (Gender, First language, Place of birth) in a separate paragraph.
