Our lovely student M recently took IELTS in the UAE and remembered the following questions from his Speaking test:

Speaking test

Part 1 (Interview)

– Where are you from?
– Are you a student or do you work?
– How often do you wear T-shirts?
– Do you prefer to dress casually or formally? Why?
– Have you ever given someone a T-shirt as a gift?
– What type of clothing is popular in your country?
– What would you wear to a special occasion such as a wedding?

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a medal or prize you received in sports. You should say

– what the medal or prize was for
– when and where you received it
– how you felt about receiving it

and explain why this achievement was important to you.

Part 3 (Discussion)

– Why is it important to give prizes to children?
– Do you think giving prizes motivates children to do better?
– Are academic prizes more meaningful than sports prizes? Why or why not?
– Should children receive participation prizes, or only for winning?
– How can schools balance rewarding academic and non-academic achievements?
– Do you think prizes encourage healthy competition, or can they create pressure?

– Can you tell me about your primary school teacher?
– What was your favorite subject in primary school?
– Why did you enjoy that subject?
– Do you think primary schools have changed over the years? How?
– Did you have any school trips or special activities in primary school?
– Do you still keep in touch with any of your primary school friends?

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a place you have visited that had a lot of wildlife or flowers. You should say:

– where the place is
– what kinds of wildlife or flowers you saw there
– what you did there

and explain why this place was special to you.

Part 3 (Discussion)

– Do you think conservation is important? Why or why not?
– What can the government do to protect endangered species?
– How can individuals contribute to wildlife conservation?
– Do you think zoos play a role in protecting animals? Why or why not?
