Disappointed with your IELTS Result?

If you are disappointed with your IELTS result, you have 2 options:

1. Take the IELTS test again or
2. Ask for re-marking.

Many people were asking me about option # 2 and here is an explanation of what’s involved.

If you believe that you deserve a better score than you were awarded, you can ask for re-marking of your results. You can ask to re-mark the whole test or any part of it (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking). Of course there is a fee, which is roughly a half of the normal IELTS test fee. If your result is changed to a higher score, the fee is refunded.

If you decided to go for remarking, here is what you need to do. Within 6 weeks of your test date, get a form called “IELTS Enquiry on Results Form” from your test center, fill in your name, address, the tests you want to have remarked, sign and date it. Pay the fee and expect your answer back within 6 weeks from the day they receive it at Cambridge.

Here is what happens next: your test paper, your writing or your tape recorded during the Speaking test will be re-marked by a different examiner – not the one in your local test center, but by a trained clerical marker (for Reading and Listening answers) or a Cambridge ESOL-appointed Examiner, employed by the British Council or IDP.

In my opinion, unless you are very sure they’ve misread your answers, in the Reading and Listening there isn’t much of a chance to get a higher score. On the other hand, in the Writing and Speaking your chances are much better, because the score does depend on who marks the work, to some extent.

Let me tell you a true story of A from Romania. She took the IELTS test and was very confident and positive about her results, however… the results arrived and she got only 6.5 in Speaking. A immediately appealed, because she was confident that she deserved more (and her scores in the other sections were also much higher, Bands 8 – 7.5).

Later on she got really pessimistic, after talking to people who assured her that IELTS folks will never give her a higher score because of some kind of conspiracy, that by giving her a higher score, IELTS organization will admit to their guilt and they are never going to do that.

Two month later, a very happy A wrote me a letter about her score being raised from 6.5 to 7 and her money was refunded. Apparently the examiner at Cambridge disagreed with the local Romanian examiner and thought A was a Band 7 candidate.

  1. Hey i gave my ielts exam through idp and my overall band score was-7
    L-8.5
    W-5.5
    S-6.5
    R-7
I want to revaluate for writing module because i need a increase of 0.5 but there is a litte confusion in my mind that i wrote 230 words in task 2 rather then 250.

  2. Hi Yatin, I’m afraid the examiner could have penalised your writing for underlength, because they do require 250 words. If you’re willing to take the chance though it will take some time and cost roughly 2/3 of the regular exam fee, but in case your score changes after remarking, you will get the fee refunded.

  3. Hello, Simon

This was my 2nd attempt and my overall band is 7.5.
    L-9
    R-7
    W-6.5
    S-6.5
I really felt that the examiner took few answers too personal and that she had to rush to complete the set of Questions during the speaking test and didn’t even let me finish my answers in part 3 of speaking test.

Also she had 1 Q repeated during the task 1. which I answered as per the question and I was confused as to why is she asking me the q again but nevertheless I answered it again.
In my first attempt I scored 8 in speaking. and I was devastated looking at my scores now.

My writing task went well. I used diff types of sentences, grammar, cohesion as stated by you. I need a min of 7 in each section.

Do you think I should give it for a re-check? Is there chance of score being increased from 6.5 to 7 in both the sections?

  4. Hi Gaurav, sorry to hear about your negative experience! The gap between your listening and writing/speaking scores is too big, it doesn’t make sense that a person can listen perfectly well but can hardly speak or write. This seems to be an indication that you deserve more than 6.5, and writing/speaking are two skills that are more likely to get an increase in score after re-evaluation. If wait time isn’t a major issue (because remarking takes several weeks) and you’re happy with the rest of your scores, eg Listening and Reading, you can go for remarking of just these two skills, speaking and writing. Keep me posted on your results – many others in a similar situation need to know about your experience.

  5. My results were out on 10 Aug, i scored L- 8.5, R- 7.5, W-6.5, S-6.5, overall – 7.5. I did well in speaking and writing also but surprised to see less score. My examiner in speaking test didn’t give me time to answer questions properly, she seems to be in a hurry to complete the set of questions given to her, i am very disappointed with the results in W, S also it appers that there is no objective assessment for these two tests, i am planning to request for a remark, if there is a flaw in assessment itself, reappearing for the test will not solve the problem, i need atleast 7 in both W, S

  6. Hi Anil, if you have a good reason to think your score was lower than you deserve, then re-marking writing and speaking should help. Your writing and speaking recording will be evaluated by a senior IELTS examiner who has no knowledge of the original score you got.

  7. Hi ,
My ielts result was out today .
    And I scored L-8 , R-8, S-8 but W-6.5
    I expected atleast 7 in writing .
Iโ€™m not sure whether to go for revaluation or should reappear.
Not sure if itโ€™s worth revaluating .
    Kindly suggest

  8. Hey when I sat d exam I was confident about writing but my scores came out to be

    Lrws= 8.5,9,6.5,7

  10. Hi i got L 7 R 6 S 6 W 5 i am sorrowful with my writing score bcoz last time i had got 6.5 in that madule what do u think is it good idea to remark it

  11. My result was out and my scores are L-8 R-8 S-8 W-6.5
I needed 8777 to apply for Canada .
    Scores are less in Writing.
So Iโ€™m thinking for revaluation .
Is it worth getting revaluating ?
Plus how much time does it take in the whole process ?
Doesnโ€™t feel like reappearing again .
And not sure if the mark wud increase . Kindly suggest

  12. Hi Pranjal, re-evaluation takes several weeks. In your case there is a big gap between all your other skills and writing, which could mean you deserve more than 6.5 in Writing. Do you think you got penalised for underlength, for writing less than 250 words? Otherwise there’s a chance for an increase in score after re-marking. If your score changes, you will get a refund for the fee you paid for re-marking. You can request re-marking for just Writing, leaving all your other scores safe.

  13. My result was out and my scores are L-8.5 R-8 S-7 W-6
I needed 8777 to apply for Canada .
    Scores are less in Writing.
So Iโ€™m thinking for revaluation .
Is it worth getting revaluating ?
And not sure if the mark wud increase . Kindly suggest

  14. Hi
    I got L-8 S-7 W-6 R -7.5 in Orly\’s . but I needed 8777 .
    Scores are less in writing.
I\’m thinking of rechecking. Is it worth
    .please suggest.

  15. Hi Simranjit, do you have reasons to believe your writing is better than 6, for example have you ever received a score higher than 6 in writing, in a previous IELTS attempt? Have you submitted your writing samples to a teacher and their estimated score was higher than 6? If you are reasonably sure 6 is too low to be your fair score, then re-marking can work in your favour.

  16. HI I recently took the IELTS advanced test. The first time I was not satisfied with my writing results but didn’t get it remarked. The second time I received a 6.5 in speaking. (I am Canadian) I have perfect English. So I got it remarked and received an 8.5. How is a difference that big possible? I would advise Everyone who is not satisfied with their results and takes the exam in Bulgaria to get an EOR. Clearly they’re failing people on purpose or just don’t know English.

  17. Hi… i got
    L-8
    R-7.5
    W-7
    S-6.5
This was my second attempt… earlier i got 7 in speaking…
    Shud i go for revaluation…
    Thanks

  18. Hi Chanpreet, if you are happy with your scores in all other sections (Listening, Reading, Writing) and you feel you deserve a 7 for your most recent Speaking performance, then remarking can help. If that is the case, ask to remark just one section, the Speaking.

  19. Hey these are my scores
    R 9
    L 9
    S 8
    W 6.5
This is the second time I gave the test and I got some improvements in all but writing. I was wondering if I should go for a recheck as I need at least 7 in all.

  20. Hi Umair, the big gap between your scores in Reading/Listening/Speaking and Writing suggests that your English level is better than Band 6.5, so there is a chance your score may increase after remarking. You can ask to get only the Writing remarked, and then in case your score for Writing goes up 0.5 band, you’ll get your wish. If you have reasons to believe your writing deserves Band 7, then you should go for reevaluation.

  21. Hi I am Karan . I score listening -8, reading-6.5, writing-6, speaking -5.5
I am not satisfied with my speaking bands.I want 0.5 bands more in speaking .I am confused about re-evaluation. Is there any chances of decrease in bands after re-evaluation ?

  22. Hi Karanvir, reevaluation can make your score go up, or down or it can stay the same. You can ask to get just one skill re-evaluated (such as Speaking), if you’re happy with the rest of your scores. In that case the other scores won’t change, only the one you asked to get remarked can change.

  23. Got my IELTS result today.

    L 8.5
    R 9
    W 6
    S 6.5

Should I go for EOR?? My writing and speaking test weren\’t that bad though.
    Any thoughts?

  24. Hi Prabhu, whether or not to request re-evaluation depends on how big an increase you hope to achieve. If you just need another 0.5 Band and you think you deserve it, then it makes sense. What is your target score?

  25. Got my IELTS result today.

    L 8.5
    R 9
    W 6
    S 6.5

Was expecting at least a 7 in speaking and writing.. Also, I managed to score 7 in speaking in my previous attempt.
Is it worth remarking both the modules?

  26. Hello,I got my IELTS result today .I got L-8,R-8,S-7,W-6.i am not at all impressed with my writing score ,because in my previous attempt i got 7 in writing.
Should I go for revaluation because I need at least 7 in writing module.

  27. Hi Kavalnain, if you’re positive you did a good job just like in your previous attempt, then yes, remarking can help. Writing score can legitimately change from one exam to another because, for example, your vocabulary on one topic is better than the next, or because you have more ideas, etc. Another possible reason, if your task in the latest attempt wasn’t long enough you could have been penalised for that.

  28. It seems you are surprised with the scores in Writing and Speaking, and if you can’t think of a good reason why you got them, perhaps remarking could help. Your Listening and Reading skills are great.

  29. Hello, it was my third attempt and i scored 7 8.5 8.5 and 6.5 in SLRW respectively. In my very first attempt i scored 7 in writing using same pattern. This time i was little worried about my speaking, I made one mistake in my writing task 2 by using a short form lf advertisment that’s (Ads) in bp1, I wrote one idea n one para ( bp1 and bp2). Vocabulary was not much high. Should o fill rechecking in writing? Please recommend as its a last week to apply for that.
    TIA

  30. Hlo ,I got my IELTS result a few days ago.i got speaking 7, listening 6.5, reading 6 and 5.5 in writing.i wanna ask u should I take revaluation for writing bcz I have need to 6 band in writing
    Thanks

  31. Hi Akshay, it shouldn’t be a problem if you wrote ads instead of advertisements. One main idea per paragraph is also fine. If you got Band 7 for writing in the past, this indicates your skill is between 6.5 and 7, and there is a chance remarking may help. If you decide to go ahead, just remember to ask to remark only the writing, as you’re obviously happy with your other scores.

  32. Hi I got my result on 18 th November 2018 as follows
    L:9,R:8, W:6.5 S : 7
Should I go for revaluation for writing module I feel that I attempted with my best potential
    Regards
    Surya

  33. Hi,
I got an overall band 7.5 but scored 6 in writing. What If I apply for EOR and the score decreases? Which score will be considered? I didnt have the time to count the words.

  34. hello
    i scored overall 6.5 bands,
    L 7
    R 7
    w 6.5
    S 5.5
my speaking was very good in comparison to my mock tests.Even i gave all the answers in detailed..But unfortunately scored less.
Already i applied fir the rechecking process can anyone suggest me how long it takes??
    i filled revaluation on 16th Nov .

  35. This was my 5th test my overall band score is good but in speaking I got 5bands in the previous tests I got 6 or 6.5 bands

  36. Hi. My recent ielts score is
    L 8.5
    W 6.5
    R 8
    S 8

My last ielts attempt got me 8 on writing, while I struggled on L at 7. This time i have improved on L, but somehow got a lower than expected on W.
Do you think in your personal opinion , the case mertis a remark ?
I think i did pretty well on writing….
And lets say we decide to raise a request, is there any weightage of previously taken ielts (both less than 12months)

  37. If you previously got Band 8 for writing, it would make sense that your current score (6.5) doesn’t reflect your true level. This is regardless of the question whether or not the examiners check your past scores, we can’t be certain about that.

  38. Hello,
In my first attempt I have scored L7.5,R8,W6.5,D6
    In second attempt-L 8.5,R 7,W 6,S6.5
So I want to ask some questions
    1) Should I apply for rechecking for writing ?
    2) Should I recheck all the modules ? Will it charge more?
    3) Are there any chances of reduction in band scores ?

  39. Hi RT, in response to your questions, you can have your result rechecked, whether or not you should do that depends on the kind of outcome you need. You can recheck specific modules, it’s your choice, and it costs the same to recheck one module or all four of them. The score can go down, up or stay the same. If the score changes, your payment for rechecking is refunded.
